"The most successful people in the world have failed more than once and yet found that failure was their biggest motivation to succeed."
It's so amazing to see many childhood friends pursuing his and her dreams. Let's be real, establishing a business isn't exactly a walk in the park, so being surrounded by people that I grew up with having success with their passion is awesome, to say the least.
15 years or so ago, Rose and I would meet up at another friend's apartment after school, chit chat about the day, watch tv and basically be acting like the average teenager. We went our separate ways after that, only to find our paths cross again years later.
Fast forward to 2017. We find out about each other's ventures and decided to have dinner to catch up. I'm super impressed of what Rose has become - I can go on about this amazing woman, but I'll let you read on to find out more about her.
The basics: Who is Rose? Where did you grow up and where do you currently reside?
I was born February 10, 1984 and raised in Southern California. I'm a mother, a jewelry designer, and small business owner. With my love for fashion, jewelry, and helping those in need, I started my online business in 2016. My jewelry line is created with purpose and love. My core values in life are: Family, Faith, Fashion, and kindness.
Congratulations with the success of your jewelry line! We know you’re a very busy gal, especially this year, with VYN doing really well. When you don’t have your entrepreneur hat on, what do you do on your spare time or what hobbies do you like doing when you’re free?
Thank you so much! It’s been such a great year and I’m truly thankful for everyone who has supported me in my first year.
Being an entrepreneur is a 24/7 gig and it never stops, but no matter what, I always make time for my family. Being a mother is also a fulltime gig so I always give my daughter, Devyn, “quality” time. I want to be able to provide her memories and experiences that she will cherish for the rest of her life. Whether it’s going to to the park, the museum, Disneyland, or on walks, I try to spend quality time with her. I also feel that its important to have “me” time. Even if its only 30 minutes out of my busy day, I enjoy doing something that I know I will enjoy. For example, I do a lot of physical activity such as going to the gym, hiking, and going for walks. I am also a devoted believer in Christ so every Wednesday and Sunday I dedicate at least an hour of my day to my church.
It’s pretty safe to say that you have a lot on your plate. Many can’t even juggle one business, yet here you are, wearing multiple hats. What was the motive behind starting VYN?
It’s safe to say that I’ve always been into fashion and the fashion industry. I was obsessed particularly with jewelry and would even make my own pieces. There was never a day I wasn’t wearing a piece of jewelry. I decided to apply at Nordstrom to sell in the Jewelry department and in 2012 I was hired! Just like that, I was selling pretty little jewels. I sold pretty well and was one of the top sellers in my department. In 2014 I had Devyn and my whole world changed. After having Devyn, I suffered postpartum depression. It was such a confusing time in my life. I was so happy to have her, but at the same time I was battling depression from within. What kept me calm was my constant praying and making my jewelry. I then started to help those in need because it was so fulfilling and rewarding in my heart and soul. I went ahead and did my research to find ways to help feed the hungry. I decided to donate to children who had nothing. This didn’t only help th children, but also slowly helped me come out of postpartum. So then it clicked! Why not start a jewelry business that gives back?! That was when I decided to open my online business and I named it after Devyn.
We all get days where our mind goes on a whirlwind action. Entrepreneurship is not the easiest path to take. I recall us even talking about wishing we had assistants, lol. How do you calm yourself down whenever you have these moments?
I constantly take a step back and just pray. I know I can’t control everything so I always have to remember that everything is going to be ok.
Did you ever come across certain family members or friends who criticize your career choices? What were their objections and how did you handle it?
I still work a full time me job at Nordstrom, I’m a mother, and I own a business. I put a lot of love and passion in what I do. Yes, there has been a lot of talk and a lot of negativity said about me opening VYN as a business. At first it was hurtful, but then I thought about it... This is something that I’ve always been passionate about and I’m finally doing it. I try my very best to ignore the negativity. If anything, it motivates me to be better in all ways possible. I won’t let negativity ruin the path I am paving.
It might be too early to ask now, but, where do you see yourself taking VYN in the near future? Do you plan to open up your own boutique?
This is something that I discuss with JB (my boyfriend) a lot. Yes, I do see myself opening up a boutique in the near future with the help of God.
Define a go-getter.
Somebody who is ambitious and passionate all the time. Someone who is not afraid to pursue what they want.
What did you have to give up/sacrifice to follow your dream? If you could go back and change one thing, knowing what you know now, what would you have done different?
I’ve sacrificed a lot of time and sleep. With this being said, If I could go back in time and change one thing it would be to have started VYN when I first wanted to start it back in 2014. At the time I hadn’t built up the courage to leap into a new venture.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
In 5 years I see myself and VYN making a greater difference in people’s lives. Also opening a boutique, selling my collection in different boutiques, main retailers, and multiple online sites.
You’re talking to a group of admirers and people who find you as an inspiration. What is the best advice you can give them about following their dreams?
You are an amazing person and listen to your heart. That passionate spirit inside you is going to take you far in your personal endeavors. The only person holding you back from following your life dreams is YOU. Ask plenty of questions, seek advice, find an inspirational mentor, read books, and surround yourself with the right people who are also motivated. Accept failure as a learning tool and then get back up and try it again. The most successful people in the world have failed more than once and yet found that failure was their biggest motivation to succeed. Also, wish others success and prosperity. Lastly, have faith and always be yourself.
There you have it, ladies and gents.
There are many things we can take out from successful individuals. Passion, determination and drive are just a few to name. No matter what venture you decide to do, OR are already doing, never be afraid to fail. It's all part of the journey! Trust and faith definitely play a big role in getting back up, but so is always, always believing in yourself.
