Daminh Tran - United States Marine and Executive Protection Agent
I’m pretty proud to call myself a United States Marine
I've actually known this featured Influential for quite some time now - when cell phones weren't that cool, but calling voicemails were (did I just put my age on blast by saying that? lol). It's amazing to see how far he's come in his own journey. As humble as he is, you'd never guess he's had such an adventurous past. It's almost like knowing a character from a movie - a jack of all trades. Which made him a perfect fit as an Influential Individual.
Read on to learn more about this awesome person.
The basics: Who is Daminh? Where did you grow up and where do you currently reside?
That’s a great question. I had to take a few moments to think about it. I’m a life-long student of lots of things. I want to be well rounded; a jack of all trades. I’m naturally curious so I’m always seeking knowledge.
I was born and raised in Orange County but my family did move to Iowa and Lousianna for a little bit before coming back. I’m still in OC now.
It’s hard to imagine you having any spare time. You seem like you’re always on the go, always doing something. But when things do wind down, what do you enjoy doing?
If I have enough days off, which I might get once or twice a year, I love being in the wilderness. Backpacking and fly fishing are my favorite things to do. Otherwise, I enjoy catching up with friends and family when I can, eating at a nice local restaurant or watching a movie.
You’ve definitely had quite the journey. Do you ever reminisce and think about how much you’ve done already?
Absolutely. I go where my interests take me. I’m all about learning and growing so I feel like every job, every experience, every opportunity has gotten me better prepared for the next journey in life.
Speaking of journey, a lot of Influentials we interviewed previously had a different career path from what they do now. Having known you for many years, I know you’ve ‘written’ a few interesting chapters in life! But, is what you’re doing now always been what you wanted to do?
I don’t think I ever had a true interest in my current career path as executive protection agent. I think it was largely due to not really knowing much about it or how to even get into it. However, just about everything I’ve done previously has always had something to do with protecting, serving and keeping people safe.
What would you consider your greatest accomplishment?
I don’t believe I’d ever leave it completely because I love the work so much but I think I’d be semi-retired from executive protection. I teach firearms and tactics part-time now and see myself doing it almost full time.
Define a go-getter.
A go-getter is a person who isn’t afraid to put in the work and willing to make sacrifices and don’t complain when things get hard. Most importantly, they do it right. They don’t pull people down to succeed. Instead, they raise others up.
What (or who) is your greatest inspiration?
My parents. They fled the war-torn country of Vietnam and came to the U.S. with hardly any money and didn’t speak much English. They worked hard, learned the language, became proud U.S. citizens and raised 4 kids while doing it. My dad is retired now and my mom retires next year. They’re the OG go-getters. lol.
You’re talking to a group of admirers and people who find you as an inspiration. What is the best advice you can give them about following their dreams?
Keep your eyes on the prize. Life isn’t linear. Sometimes, things change and you have to learn how to adapt and overcome. No one said you couldn’t take a detour on your way to your dreams. You’ll learn things along the way that will make you better suited for when you get to where you want to be.
